Definition: The Dow Jones Industrial Average, also known as the Dow, is the best known and most widely quoted stock index in the popular press. The Dow consists of 30 companies considered leaders in their industries. Together they account for a significant amount of the value of the market. Although not as reflective of the whole market as other indexes, the Dow is watch earnestly.
