Editor’s Note: This is the second is a series of brief reviews of major financial Web sites.
You can find any number of Web sites that will analyze stocks for you, but most of the really good ones are very expensive.
Morningstar.com is one of the exceptions. The site offers a tremendous amount of stock information for free.
If you want their analysis, it will cost you about $14.50 per month for a subscription.
Serious investors should consider this money well spent. Even if you don’t subscribe, the free information is very detailed.
Strong Points
- Morningstar is better known for their work with mutual funds, but that is a bonus to stock investors since many people own individual stocks and mutual funds.
- Coverage of stock news is very complete and timely.
- Commentary on stock investing ideas is usually rock solid.
Weak Points
- Comprehensive analysis (with paid subscription) covers only 2,000 stocks, which may seem like a lot, but if you are interested in small-cap, new issues, you may not find them covered.
- Stock screens (free and paid) are not always explained clearly for novice investors.
Conclusion
A subscription to the premium content is worth the price if you are a serious investor. Others will find the free content plenty robust.
